Born on March 28, 1811, in Prachatitz, Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic), John Neumann realized a long cherished dream when he came to the United States and was ordained a priest in New York City in 1836. Four years later he joined the Redemptorist and subsequently labored in Maryland , Pennsylvania , Ohio and the American frontier. He was the first Redemptorist to make religious profession in the United States .
